There is a report that Tony Campolo was preaching one day and said, “There are 120,000 children who die each day due to hunger” Campolo paused and nothing happened . “Bullshit!” There was a stunned silence. Then Campolo said, “You are shocked that I said “Bullshit” but when I said that 120,000 children died each day due to hunger, that did not move you.
We are stunned that 300 Nigerian girls were kidnapped.
But we are not stunned that around 3,000,000,000 girls and women are held hostage each day by religions that devalue them. These religions claim they honor and value women, but the restrictions placed these same women tell a different story.
Bullshit! Now I have your attention. What are you going to do about it?

That’s a very catchy way to get people’s attention. I agree that religion can bind women, and make them feel like they are lesser than men. The problem is I don’t know what to do about it.
I have tried to speak up against those who believe only men can be leaders, but they don’t listen, because they believe not having woman preachers is biblical. I don’t feel called to preach myself but I have known women in the past who were discouraged from even leading worship because they were women.

Welcome! Like you, I have not been called to preach, or deacon, or anything except this ministry. I haven’t experienced the heartache other women have. What I hear most is that it the people in the pews that keep women from being equal. The pastor is afraid they will cause a fuss if women preach or lead. Those who want women in ministry do not have a reputation of causing a fuss. It is time to change that. However, I agree that it is very hard to get through to our religious leaders but I am going to suggest several things that can be done. First, write and visityour pastor, visit or write to your associational, district, or area ministers if your denomination is set up that way (if you need help let me know and I will help devise a letter since I have written many such letters). Give your pastor one of my books and tell him that you think it is time for women to be equal in church. Second, learn as much as you can. Tape a small sign in your backseat car window like I do (I’m with Shirley. Dethroning Male Headship) that can be seen whenever you park your car. Design a tee shirt that says Women Equal-No Buts. Be innovative and create your own unique way. Spread the word on facebook. Speak up whenever you can. I am glad to hear that you are interested.
