Fox News and Christians

Gretchen Carlson, formerly of Fox News, has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes.

“I have strived to empower women and girls throughout my entire career,” Carlson said in a statement. “Although this was a difficult step to take, I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace.

In an earlier blog on Huffington Post, Carlson said:

“Finally, we have to stop thinking of sexual harassment as only a women’s issue,” she wrote. “It comes down to how we raise our children, including our sons. It’s not enough to tell our daughters to stand up for themselves. Part of putting an end to harassment involves educating boys to be completely accepting of women, both at home and at work, so that harassment becomes a relic of the past.”

It is doubtful that a 76 year old man wakes up one morning and begins sexual harassment of an employee. More than likely it was a long-time moral failing of that man, and it has been reported that he has a history of sexual abuse against the women he hires.

So, where does this leave Christians, who make up a large part of the viewing audience of Fox News?

I, myself, am conflicted. I watch Fox News – a lot. But I have also been very concerned about the women on Fox News. They have to show their legs and thighs with very short dresses, and low-cut dresses are far too common. I realize that this is the norm in New York, but I do not live in New York City. I can guarantee you, most of Fox News viewers live in the south where modest dress is the norm. I have also been concerned that women cannot age on Fox News and that they must wear long hair which makes them look like immature dolls. Women cannot grow up on Fox News. I am tired of women being judged by their breasts, their legs, and their long ‘teenager’ hair. I am tired of a society that tells women they cannot grow up and mature, and age as the years pass.

In fact, religions that do not give women full equality are acting just like Fox News. They insist upon a helpless female who must submit to men, and who cannot grow up to be full adults.

There is no doubt culture is changing. The past did not have it right in many ways: race and lack of women and girls’ equality being two that were diametrically opposed to the teachings of Christ and what Christianity should be about.

It is 2016. Are you clinging to an out-dated culture regarding race and women?
