Games are not won in the bullpen or on the bench. Games are not won unless the contestants come face to face in the game.
Games are not won unless you have the ball in your hand.
Like Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers…”
What I am going to suggest can apply to every one of you. Particularly, it will apply to those who are teachers. You have the ball in your hands.
Adele Hebert’s book “Every Woman and Child” is a valuable resource for those who have the ball in their hands. She brings women into view where previously we did not see women. Adele tells us what we should know, but what we often do not see, is that wherever there are children, there are women close by. The same is also true that wherever we see women, we often find children.
- Take a good look at your Sunday school lesson today. Is there any way that you can bring women’s equality into that lesson? Perhaps you are sitting in a class and the teacher has asked a question. Can you make the invisible woman come into the light?
An example is the loaves and fishes found in John 6. The story is found in all four gospels, but the information that a little boy supplied the fish is missing from all those gospels except John.
That little boy had a mother who packed their lunch of five baked barley loaves and two cooked fishes. But Mom is never mentioned. You can speculate that the mother took the little boy to hear Jesus. You can emphasize that the crowd went to see Jesus because of the miracles he had performed on the sick (v 2) and perhaps his mother had taken the boy there because he was ill and she wanted Jesus to heal him. We don’t know if there was a father, but a little boy had a mother close by. Two fishes would feed two small people.
Look for the story. Tell the story and include women wherever you can.
- Youth pastors have an obligation to teach girls and boys the truth of the Bible. That truth includes female equality, whether the Youth lesson teaches it or not. Find ways to include female equality for girls and young women in your messages. Make sure the teachers who are teaching your youth, teach girls that they are biblically equal for God’s service. Set up a visit with them and ask them what their position on female equality is. Give them resources to find out more about equality. (www.cbeinternational.org is nondenominational and has these kinds of resources, but there are others such as Cokesbury).
- Adult teachers have maturity and Bible knowledge, but have not looked for the invisible woman. I had never heard of Huldah when I began my ministry. Has your Sunday school overlooked women in the Old Testament and in the New Testament that show how God used women to lead his people? Find these outstanding women who are lost to most Sunday school classes. Ask the person who chooses your church literature to be proactive in choosing teaching materials, and to use materials that teach women’s equality.
- Choose children’s Bible story books that feature girls and women prominently. Make sure there are pictures of women in heroic situations. If you can’t find them, contact major bookstores and ask that they give you these opportunities to teach your children about the women of the Bible.
You have the ball in your hands.
Remember what the apostle Paul told Timothy, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (2 Timothy 1:5)
Be a teacher, whether as a student, a parent, church member, or the leader. Get in the game. You have the ball in your hands.
