Attitudes about women are deeply ingrained. Not all people feel this way, but a big number of people do, and their attitude about women being under the authority of a man is so prevalent that churches will not touch the subject. They are scared to, but it is obvious that a majority of the pastors believe that women are to be under the authority of a man.
One day a couple of years ago, a man came in my office. I had seen him previously as he had showed up for a meeting with another group. He introduced himself as being a retired minister of a certain denomination. Then he handed me a color flyer to look at. He pointed out that he had had the flyer done professionally and he was proud of it.
He had developed some Bible Studies and wanted to put the flyer on our bulletin board so people could order CDs of the studies.
Knowing the answer beforehand, I asked him” What do you think about women in ministry?”
“NO WAY! NO HOW!”
I thanked him for his flyer, said goodbye, and went inside the office and threw the thing in the trash can.
This retired pastor seemed to have no conscience or awareness that he was talking to a woman this way.
